J.S. Bach - Pièce d'Orgue BWV 572
This neo-baroque organ (1975) with romantic influences, has 40 + 15
stops verdeeld over 3 + 1 manualen en pedaal.
During Octoberof the year 2018 we have recorded the main organ of the
St Janskerk for Hauptwerk.
In the year of 1970, the Reformed Community of Schiedam decided to
acquire a new organ and thanks to the financial support of an
institute, the purchase became reality.
The Dutch company Flentrop Orgelbouw was entrusted with the creation
of it. They built the organin the organ case of Niehoff (16th century)
and the pedal cases of Jacob Cools (1712), in which the firm of
Standaart built a pneumatic organ in the year of 1919. The remains of
the old pipes were used in the new instrument, which was delivered in
the year of 1975.
As to character of the sound, the new organ corresponds as much as
possible with the old-Dutch tradition. Therefore, the pipes for
instance have been made of metal with high contents of lead.
In the year of 1994, a re-intonation was done and the temperature was
changed. The WerckmeisterIII temperature was altered into equal, the
windpressure lowered and some intonation corrections were done. All of
these activities were performed by Flentrop Orgelbouw and the engineer
H. Kooiker acted as advisor. The presentation of the revised
instrument took place on the 29th of July, 1994.
In the year of 2006 Mr. Herman Pelgrim added a Cymbelstar.
In the year of 2011, the firm of Van den Heuveltook care of extensive
maintenance, in cooperation with Mr. Herman Pelgrim. The pedal was
extended with a Prestant 16', originating from the Magnalia Dei Church
at Schiedam.
When in November2011 sufficient money had been collected, the
realization of a Fagot 32' project was started. This stop was placed
on new mechanical wind chests behind the old pedal chests.
For this expansion the Schiedam organ builder Herman Pelgrim again
acted as an advisor. The Fagot 32' was presented to public during a
concert on Queen'sbirthday, April 30th of 2012.
In the year of 2014, an offer for expansion of the organ with a fourth
manual was asked and received, however, sofar, insufficient financial
means delayed the realization of this plan. Nevertheless, using
samples from other Sygsoft sample sets, this fourth manual (Récit
Expressif) was added to the new Schiedam sampleset, a look alike as
close as possible to the manual foreseening the offer received. In
this way, you can get a good impression of how the organ could have
sounded or, hopefully, may sound in a not too far future.
About the recordings
Three channel technology
Sliders on the tab "speeltafel"
All used samples are recorded in stereo from 3 positions (24-bit
96kHz).
As one of the final steps, the samples are converted to 24-bit
48kHz.
The set is delivered in the 3-channel technique devised by Sygsoft,
allowing the user to adjust the listening position themselves.
There are 3 positions:
1: Front, recorded very close to the organ. This provides a very
direct recording that is useful for study purposes.
2: Middle, this recording was made at about 3 times the distance used
in the front recording.
3: Rear, recorded far from the organ is used as surround.
Through three sliders (0-100%), a mix can be made of the three
positions that is to your liking.

Start Hauptwerk V (or higher) and install this file via the menu File
| Install Organ, Temperament, or Impulse Response Reverb... Hauptwerk
will 'learn' which protected sets are currently on the market.
For users of Hauptwerk 5 or higher:
Make sure that Hauptwerk is not loaded.
Open your iLok account and choose Licenses/Redeem Activation code
and cut and paste the many-digit code into the screen.
Activate your license to iLok Cloud or to the iLok dongle. In the
latter case: then place the dongle on the Hauptwerk PC. It appears that this rule is not clear to everyone:
3a: Go to your iLok account (log in if necessary) and select the
sample set for which you want to enter the activation code.
3b: At the top right of the iLok screen is a gray/green check
mark.
If you go over this with the mouse you will see the text
"Activate licenses".
Click on this check mark and you will see a new screen.
3c: Click on Activate and Ok. Now the checkmark in the previous
screen turns green.
3d: Now double-click on the line you are working on and the
screen that opens must show "License status active" on the top
line.
3e: If necessary, repeat the above for the eventualy other newly
purchased organs.
Restart Hauptwerk and you can install and use the organ.
Before download and install, note the following:
Download all .CompPkg.Hauptwerk files.
Load these files in the same folder and
Do not change the file names and
Do not unpack by hand.
Check the MD5 checksums with the WinMD5 program, free to download
from
http://www.winmd5.com
or http://www.fastsum.com If a checksum is incorrect, throw the wrong download file away
from the PC and download that file again.
Start Hauptwerk (File/Install organ....), selecteer in de map waarin
u de bestanden zojuist hebt gedownload,
het bestand met extensie .CompPkg_Hauptwerk_rar in Hauptwerk's
component installer.
Hauptwerk automatically finds the other files.
If you get error messages, scroll to the end of the log file (this
opens automatically if something goes wrong when unpacking) to see
what goes wrong.
Usually a file is missing, or there is a file in the wrong folder or
a file is damaged.
Before loading the organ, first have a look at the
system information
regarding the expected memory usage etc.

The computer
To play the full version of this sample set without restrictions, you
will need a modern, fast computer with at least 32 GB of RAM and, e.g.
Windows 10 64 bit installed.
Obviously Hauptwerk must also be installed with the latest version
5.0.1 (or higher) Advanced.
It is said that the best results are achieved using Apple-MacIntosh
computers; however, we have no experience with this. It is difficult
to make exact statements about what is needed. The "mother" website
hauptwerk.com
provides much information about this issue.
Prerequisites .
Please note: This information applies to the newest version of
Hauptwerk.

protected with the Hauptwerk Protection System via the
iLok account or dongle from your
Hauptwerk program.

memory.
The sound card
A good internal or external sound card. For more information go to:

Manuals/keyboards/pedal òr complete organ with MIDI out
3 or 4 manuals or keyboards and a (at least 25 keys) pedal òr a
complete electronic organ with MIDI out. Beautiful consoles
specifically designed for Hauptwerk are commercially available.
In the Netherlands these are available through, for example,
Those who are technically inclined can provide their keyboard with
MIDI capability using hardware from, for example,
WIRA,
MIDI-Hardware.com
or MGB . We ourselves have
done this using a Heyligers organ dating from around 1975 (using WIRA
hardware). The conversion was about 300 Euro and everything has worked
perfectly for years.
Speakers/headphone
The superb sound quality of Hauptwerk is best experienced through
high-quality headphones, such as AKG or Sennheiser.
We prefer connecting the sound card to a (possibly multi-channel)
sound system. The above mentioned companies can also advise you on any
purchases in this area.
What you definitely should not do is listen to Hauptwerk
through the built-in speakers of the monitor or a set of €10 computer
speakers!

De nrs. 1-2-3: is for loading mode 16 bit, single release compressed
(a possibility but we think the quality is insufficient).

release (the standard Hauptwerk loading mode).
De nrs. 7-8-9: is for loading mode 16 bit, uncompressed and multi
release.
De nrs. 10-11-12: is for loading mode 20-bit, compressed and multi

There are of course many more variants, e.g. pipe samples loaded at 24

Church
This tab shows the front of the organ and if you click on the photo
you will see the church.
Tab 2 : Registers (Stops)
Stop panel for users of a single touchscreen
On this tab you see a simple image of the stops, suitable for users of
a single touchscreen.
The stops and playing aids not originating from the real organ are
underlined.
With the button "MOTOR" you may activate the windmachine.
As to the "TREMULANT MANUAAL I" button for the main manual
(Hoofdwerk): The real organ has no Tremulant on that manual), we have
just addedit for those addicted to this stop.
The button "Nachtegaal" represents the voice on the small
Choir organ of the church, made by
Herman Pelgrim .
We tried to record this attractive choir organ for Hauptwerk, but the
noise of the engine did not allow this.
On the right top of the screen, the volumes of the various channels
can be adapted with sliders, so that you can choose your preferred
"listening position".
A number of voices show a red/yellow led at the right side of the
button. By clicking on this led you may change the Tremulant for this
stop in "recorded = yellow", or "modulated = red". With the button
"Tremulant recorded/modulated" on the tab "Schakelaars" (switches) you
may switch all leds simultaneously. These leds and the buttons have
not been included in the "registration" list of this sample set.
Finally: the settings last used will be saved.
The "Récit Expressif" for the larger part consists of samples that
reach Midi 24 to Midi 103, so two octaves more than the extent of the
manual. With the buttons 16/8/4 or 8/4/2 you may choose which part of
the voice you wish to hear, whereby 2 or 3 together is also possible.
With exception of the Voix Humaine, the tremulantfor these voices is
modulated, not recorded.
Tab 3 : Schakelaars (Switches)
Switches
The largerpart of this tab is not really needed by users of the sample
set, but for those who are interested in more details it gives some
idea of what is required to make a sample set of this compass
functioning.
Just think a moment of the fact that behind each (Manual) button there
are 56 (80/IV)long, 56 (80/IV) middle long and 56 (80/IV) short
releases and about as many of them for the recorded tremulants. The
same hold for the pedal, but then 30 i/o 80.
Furthermore, it is useful to know that by rightclicking you will
instantly reach the voicing screen.
Detail
With the "Tremulant recorded/modulated" button you can switch
all leds of the stops panel in one time. The settings last used will
be saved. The button "Sesquialter gescheiden/gekoppeld" (
Sesquialter bass/treble separated or not) gives youthepossibility to
split the voice for use in Bass or Treble. (The split is original).
The slider "Célèste 8' Tuning" enables you to set the beating
of the Célèste:
"+" (100) = maximum beat
nom "72" = nominal value set by us
"0" (50) = no beating
" - "(0) is lower beating for example as used for an Unda Maris.
The "RESET" button brings you back to the nominal
position.
Tab 4 : Virtuele Speeltafel (Virtual Console)
The virtual console
This screen is used only to connect the manuals with your console.
Right click the manual you want to connect and follow the guidelines
of Hauptwerk.
Tab 5 : Wind
The windmodel of the original organ
The windmodel of the Récit Expressif
On these tabs you find a diagram of the windsupply to the organ. We
made a separate screen for the windsupply to the original organ and to
the additional 4th manual.
With the various sliders you may regulate the windsupply to the bellow
and the windchests.
With the "R" of the reset buttons you will return to the
setting which in our opinion is to prefer. The button
"Sygsoft" at the right under allows you to reset all of the 8
sliders.
Important:
Should you decide to only partly load this sample set (for instance
the Ram memory of your computer is insufficient and you choose not to
load the rear samples) this would decrease wind requirment by 33% and
the organ become farless wind sensitive as is in reality. In that
case, go to Organ settings/Organ preferences/Windsupply model and
choose here a value of around 150. In case you would load one position
only, e.g. "middle", (wind consumption reduces by 66%), then set the
value at around 300 to get the same result.
Of course, you may choose any value if you do not like the behaviour
of the organ. By checking in this same windmodeltab, you may totally
switch off the the wind supply. If you would decide not to load the
voices of the Récit Expressif (so, if you use the original organ
only), no changes in the wind settings are necessary.

These tabs can be used if you use two touchscreens.
The buttons marked with underlined text are not original.
The red/white squares on the left side on some stops are switches that
have the same function as the red/yellow LEDs on the tab "Stops"
described above, however here is red = Recorded tremulant and white =
Modulated tremulant. With the button
"Tremulant included / modulated" you can convert all red /
white corners of the register images on the tabs "Left" and "Right" at
once. These squares and buttons are not included in the "Registration"
table of this sample set. However, the settings you used the last time
are remembered.
